The formula

To convert gigabytes to kilobytes, multiply the size in gigabytes by 1,000,000:

A worked example

Say your monthly mobile data cap is 1.5 GB and a tracker reports usage in KB:

Decimal vs binary — which gigabyte?

This conversion uses the decimal (SI) rule: 1 GB = 1,000,000 KB, the way carriers and drive makers advertise. Operating systems often count in binary, where a "gigabyte" is a gibibyte and works out to 1,048,576 KiB. So a 1.5 GB allowance in decimal is a little smaller than what a binary-counting tool would call 1.5 GB. Same words, two different sizes — that mismatch trips up a lot of data-cap math.
