How it works

The amount you save is the discount percentage of the original price, and the final price is what's left:

saved = price × (discount% ÷ 100) final price = price − saved

A worked example

A $120 item with 15% off:

saved = 120 × 0.15 = $18.00 final price = 120 − 18 = $102.00

Stacking discounts

When two discounts apply, they multiply rather than add. A 20% coupon on top of a 10%-off sale doesn't make 30% off — the 20% comes off the already-reduced price:

$100 → 10% off → $90 → 20% off → $72

That's a final price of $72, or 28% off overall, not 30%.

Quick mental math

Round percentages are easy to estimate: 10% is the price with the last digit dropped, 25% is a quarter, and 50% is half. For something like 15%, take 10% and add half of it again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage off?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the price. For example, 25% off $80 saves $20, leaving a final price of $60.

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together. Taking 20% off and then another 10% off is not 30% off — the second discount comes off the already-reduced price, which works out to 28% off overall.

What's a quick way to estimate a discount in my head?

For 10%, move the decimal one place left ($80 → $8). For 20%, double that ($16). For 25%, take a quarter off. Combine these for other amounts — 30% is 10% three times.
