How it works
The tip is a percentage of the bill, and the total is the bill plus the tip:
tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
If more than one person is sharing, the total is divided evenly between them.
A worked example
A $56.40 bill with a 20% tip, split between 2 people:
tip = 56.40 × 0.20 = $11.28
total = 56.40 + 11.28 = $67.68
each person = 67.68 ÷ 2 = $33.84
Common tip percentages
- 15% — standard for acceptable service
- 18% — a common default for good service
- 20%+ — for great service, or larger groups where a gratuity is expected
Splitting the bill
The tip is worked out on the whole bill first, then the tip-included total is split. That way everyone pays the same share and the server gets the full tip — which is simpler and fairer than each person guessing their own portion.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15% to 20% is typical for sit-down service, with 18% a common middle choice and 20% or more for great service. The calculator defaults to 18%, but you can set any percentage.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is fine, and people do both. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more common, but the difference is small. This calculator applies the tip to whatever bill figure you enter, so type the pre-tax total if that's what you prefer.
How does splitting the bill work?
The calculator adds the tip to the bill, then divides that grand total evenly by the number of people. So a $118 total split four ways is $29.50 each — tip included.
