How the math works

Everything is anchored to a yearly amount, then shared back out to each period:

  • To yearly: an hourly rate is rate × hours per week × weeks per year; a weekly rate is rate × weeks per year; a monthly rate is rate × 12.
  • Back to each period: weekly is yearly ÷ weeks per year, hourly is that weekly figure ÷ hours per week, daily is the weekly figure ÷ days per week, and monthly is yearly ÷ 12.

Because it's one shared yearly anchor, the conversion is exact in both directions — enter an hourly rate, switch to reading it back, and you land on the same number.

A worked example

Take $22 an hour, a standard 40-hour week over 52 weeks:

  • Per year: 22 × 40 × 52 = $45,760
  • Per month: 45,760 ÷ 12 = $3,813.33
  • Per week: 45,760 ÷ 52 = $880

Set a 25% tax rate and the yearly take-home is 45,760 × 0.75 = $34,320. Turn on a 3% annual raise over 10 years and year 10's salary is 45,760 × 1.03⁹ ≈ $59,700 — in today's dollars, before inflation.

How do you turn an hourly rate into a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you work each year. With the standard 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, $22 an hour is 22 × 40 × 52 = $45,760 a year. Change the hours or weeks — for part-time work or unpaid time off — and every figure updates.

Can it go the other way, from a yearly salary to an hourly rate?

Yes. Pick 'Year' as the period and enter your salary, and it works backward to the hourly, weekly, and monthly equivalents using the same hours-per-week and weeks-per-year you set. A $45,760 salary comes back to $22 an hour on a standard full-time schedule.

How is take-home pay worked out?

You enter a single effective tax rate — the overall share of your pay that goes to tax — and it takes that percentage off each figure. So a 25% rate on $45,760 leaves $34,320. It's a flat rate you choose, not a lookup of tax brackets, so it works for any country and never goes out of date. For an exact figure, use the rate from your own payslip or tax return.

What does the year-by-year projection show?

It lists your pay for each year over the term you set. In 'flat' mode the salary stays the same every year; in 'with annual raise' mode it grows by the raise percentage each year and compounds. Each year expands to show what that salary works out to per hour, per week, and per month, and a running total of everything earned so far.

Does the projection account for inflation?

No. Every figure is in today's dollars with no inflation adjustment, so a salary ten years out is shown at its face value, not its future buying power. Treat the long-range numbers as a nominal projection, not what the money will be worth then.

What are bi-weekly and semi-monthly — are they the same?

Not quite. This tool uses bi-weekly, meaning every two weeks — 26 pay periods a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month — 24 pay periods a year — which works out slightly higher per cheque for the same salary. If your employer pays twice a month, use the monthly figure and divide by two.
