How it works
Pick an output format — JPG (smallest file, but no transparency) or WebP (small, and it keeps transparency) — then adjust the quality slider from 1 to 100%, with 80% as the default. Lower quality gives a smaller file with more visible artifacts; higher quality stays closer to the original but produces a bigger file. The tool shows you the before and after file size so you can see exactly how much you saved.
When to use it
Reach for this when a photo is too big to email or upload, when you're trying to meet a file size limit, or when you want a web page to load faster. If you also need to change the image's dimensions, do that with the Image Resizer instead — this tool only touches file size.
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing an image lose quality?
Yes, a little — compression here is lossy, meaning it throws away some detail to make the file smaller. At the default 80% quality most photos look nearly identical to the original. Once you save at a lower quality, that lost detail can't be brought back, so keep your original file if you might need it later.
Will this change the size of my image (width and height)?
No. The Image Compressor only reduces file size — the pixel dimensions stay exactly the same. If you need to change the width or height instead, use the Image Resizer.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole process runs in your browser using a canvas element. Your image is never sent to a server — it stays on your device the entire time.
