How it works
This tool removes a background by color, not by recognizing the subject:
- Pick the background color. Auto looks at the pixels around the edge of your image and assumes that color is the background — which is exactly right for a clean shot. Pick a color lets you set it yourself, handy for a green screen or when Auto guesses wrong.
- Tolerance controls how close a pixel's color has to be to the background before it's removed. Low tolerance removes only near-exact matches; higher tolerance sweeps up more shades (useful when the background isn't perfectly even), but too high and it starts eating into the subject.
- Edge softness feathers the border between kept and removed pixels, so the cutout edge looks smooth instead of jagged.
The result downloads as a transparent PNG.

How do I get a cleaner cutout?

Then nudge Tolerance up until the background is fully gone, and use Edge softness to smooth a jagged or haloed edge. If the subject itself starts fading, lower the Tolerance a little.
Why is the result a PNG?
Transparency needs a format that can store it. PNG is the only widely-supported format your browser can write that keeps a transparent background — JPG has no transparency at all, so the result is always a PNG.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole thing runs in your browser on a canvas. Your image is never sent to a server or stored — it stays on your device the entire time, and the only way it moves is you downloading the result.
